I was going to write about Citi Financial’s purchase of a $50 million jet for their executives and their gross abuse of government bail out money. But considering Gov. Blagojevich’s lack of intelligence with his words (and suicide) in the media, I just had to push ‘Moron of the Week’ to today. Who knows, maybe he’ll make it again on Friday. We can only hope he provides us with as much entertainment as he has the last few days.
Let’s begin with what is arguably the worst quote in the media this week:
“I’ve been criticized for this, but I’m not comparing myself to Dr. King or Nelson Mandela or Mahatma Gandhi, but I tried to reach in to history and imagine some inspiring figures that would have gone through something like I was going through for sustenance and inspiration.”
I hope you’re as speechless as I was when I first read this quote. I actually read it twice more to make sure this was real. Yes, a rich white man compared himself to the martyred figure of Black America, the African image of hope, and finally Gandhi, who led India to their independence. I somehow don’t see the connection…
Should we give him credit for at least trying? Maybe. Governor Blagojevich went on The View, Good Morning America, and Larry King Live to claim his innocence. He also failed to show to his own trial. I’m not too sure here, but maybe reaching out to stay-at-home moms and appearing on CNN’s flailing night show is not the best way to strong-arm the US media or our courts. But, maybe those were the only shows who actually cared to put him on television.
Blagojevich said on Larry King, “If I would have some how… given up and just quit, what will that say to my two daughters?” Well, that you’re like most other politicians out there: a cheater and a liar. Then he ended with the question, “Whatever happened to the presumption of innocence?” There never was one, Blagojevich, we heard you on the wire tap (thanks Bush, kinda).
Finally, the soon to be former governor said on The View that he actually considered asking Oprah to take his seat in the senate. Really, seriously? Why Mr. Governor? Do tell. Because, she’s “an African-American woman who by herself has more influence than 100 senators… from her bully pit.”
Oprah responded in an interview saying that she was “amused by the whole thing.” Believe me, so are we. I now crown you, Blagojevich, Moron of the Week, on Tuesday.
